...and how to fix it

Update 2: I just isolated this problem - and it is a bug with the latest Unity player, not Mars Explorer. I am collaborating with Unity 3D on this - but for now, downgrading your Unity player from 2.5 to 2.1 will solve the problem. To downgrade, replace /Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plugins/Unity Web Player.plugin with This Plugin File (unzip it first), and restart your browser. (Windows users: a fix for you is in the works)...
Update: Instead of the files I mentioned earlier, try deleting the entire folder titled "Unity" in your user account's library folder. This is a much more complicated bug than I though it would be, but I am almost sure that this will fix it...

After hearing reports that playing 1.9.5 caused many users to experience games from the server host's ride view and not their own - I was puzzled about what could be causing this.

I still am.

However, the most likely cause of something like this would be a camera preference set by 1.9.5 that earlier versions of the game can't handle.

If you are experiencing this problem - and are on a Mac, please try deleting the following files on your computer (which will restore Mars Explorer's in-game settings to their defaults):

 /Users/ {Your OS X User Name} /Library/Preferences/unity.ATI Design.Mars Explorer.plist
 /Users/ {Your OS X User Name} /Library/Preferences/com.Aubrey Falconer.Mars Explorer.plist

(Advanced Windows users shouldn't have a problem finding where Unity stores Mars Explorer's pref files on their computers)

Restart your browser, and let me know if the problem still persists!

I am a windows user, but have no clue where marsxplr's pref files are, I just searched my puter, and no luck finding anything close to that, i uninstalled unity, scanned every file on my puter, shut it off, restarted it, no luck.

Try looking in "%APPDATA%UnityWebPlayerPrefs" - searching for any one of those folder names should find something...

I am going to actually save the file this time instead of just running it, let me see if that turns something up

hmm - deleting the "unity.Tonio Loewald.Prototype.plist" file definitely won't help, but if you can find anything about Mars Explorer in your library folder - there's a good chance that deleting it will fix the problem.

it's very odd...seeing it spread through versions even. Very odd. However, i think it is "stored" in the person's computer sort of speak otherwise it would travel versions right? It's never happened to me, thank God after i had to get a new hard drive and all. Once you isolate the problem, it would be kinda cool to have it be a FUNCTIONAL cam OPTION in servers.

OK. I deleted the file in pic #1
 but could not find this  /Users/ {Your OS X User Name} /Library/Preferences/unity.ATI Design.Mars Explorer.plist
even after typing it into the finder window search box .

The second two pictures are of what's left in the unity folder of my Mac's user's library folder.
and the last pic inside localhost folder has my user name trimmed off of the front...
I restarted Safari, cleared cache and went directly to 1.9 and joined 2 different games and still had the host cam bug in both.
Before all this happened, I downloaded the app for Mac then trashed it because of crashes and have played in browser since. I started playing at first with the widget months ago. I even trashed unity and re-downloaded it a couple of days ago, cleared Safari cache, and , as I said before, I  did a rain dance with rattles and grass skirt  :)
What to do next?
I even saw a game in 1.9 yesterday called "HELP - I HAVE  A CAMERA GLITCH!"

OK I just trashed everything unity in my Library folder, restarted my computer, reset the P ram X3 cycles, launched Safari, cleared Safari cache, went directly to 1.9, typed my name, joined a game and got Observe mode with right mouse click or  1 key. All other cameras respond properly to number keys and/or buttons on game screen. All my other preferences came up default - Music, Chase, Fantastic, which is different that I set them originally so preferences have been reset.

Kruncher;

Observe mode in your vehicle - or in the host's?
Are you still experiencing the bug - or is the bug fixed?

If I join 1.9 or 1.91 I get my Observe Mode or host cam with right click or 1 key.

If I host 1.9 or 1.91 I get my cam1 or my Observe Mode with right click or 1 key.

I haven't tried 1.94 lately but deleting unity folder didn't help there either.

Last night I joined in 1.95 and got my Observe mode with right click or 1 key. Repeat - 1.95

Entire Unity folder deleted from library>1.9 or 1.91>bug

What about all those poor players that don't even know there IS a home site? (Rhetorical)  I'd say that comprises about 90% of all players.

I searched for the windows file, but nothing came up, so I just cleared all of my firefox downloads, re-installed unity, and restarted my computer. And hurrah! My camera views were back to normal. :D Thanks, aubrey.

There's not much to it, actually. All you need to do is reinstall unity player.

I know this works for clearing out IE, not sure about FF, you can try it. It's like resetting Safari without Safari. :p I also do not know if it works on Vista. Go to the "Run" command window and type in "inetcpl.cpl" (Without the quotes, of course). Go to "Browsing History>Delete>Delete all." That should clear you out faster than a stick o' dynamite. Whether or not it will work...IDK. If the setting is a cookie or temp. file it should. Mmmm...cookies!

hi aubrey,

about my temperature problem: when i use fullscreen since the 1.9.5 bug i have a gpu temperature over 80°c and the fans running over 4500 rpm in all versions! (i use fancontrol)

before the 1.9.5 bug i had only 73°c and 3500 in the 1.9 version

i cant play the new versions with this temperature :(

Hmm - I just developed a fan speed of 6000 RPM and a GPU diode temp of 70ºc on my MacBook Pro while watching a several minute youtube video. Is 80ºc really all that bad?

Are you running at the same game quality setting as in previous versions (you may very well be able to support a higher quality setting with all the new optimizations) - and what happens when you reduce the quality level a bit?

idk but iam fearfully because i had a melted gpu on my motherboard befor a few months.
but the temperature was never over 100°c

therefore i use fancontrol now

my fancontrol basespeed is 1800rpm
lower threshold 55°C for cpu
upper threshold 81°C for cpu, gpu becomes a little hotter

thats a good climate to work and play B-)

i am playing in simple mode with 49fps
and when i go to fullscreen my fans runnin faster and faster up to 5000rpm

i ever played 1.9 with 73°c and 3500rpm.

I can understand that you would want your computer to run cooler, and I just added a FPS cap to 1.9.6 (to be released very soon) which should allow you to specify exactly how hard you want your computer to work on rendering the game - and therefore how much heat it should generate.

The reason that 1.9.5 generates more heat is probably because it is so optimized that it gets much higher framerates out of your machine, and therefore puts more work on the graphics card.

Downgrading Unity plugin worked! Thanks Aubrey!

Here is how to play all versions with no Camera bug.

1. Delete 1.95 bookmark/shortcut so you don't visit 1.95 with browser by habit and re-bug your camera.

2. On Mac, follow Aubrey's instructions for downgrading unity.

3. Click this link Mac to download the app  for 1.95

4. Prevent Cam bug by NEVER visiting 1.95 with your browser until Aubrey posts that the bug in Unity has been fixed. Use browser for all other versions.

There must be some unity thingy hiding in my beloved Mac. Should I get some sort of app zapper?
I did exactly as your update says with no progress. I did get a frame rate of 144 fps on "Good" in 1.9 which, for me, is usually around 45-70.  Below is a paste of my comment from yesterday.

As of tonight, it's no longer just a host cam bug. I went to 1.91, started a game (me as host) and got my buggy's Observe mode with right click or 1 key. All other cams matched appropriate input.

I've been searching for the old unity on my windows and reinstalling it. The problem is that every time I go to 1.95, the update installs itself and I have to redo the process...

There is a fix for windows users, just uninstall unity with your windows uninstaller, then install again at the link below, and the issue should be fixed. Remember, do not re-install Unity 2.5, re-install 2.1 at the link below, thank you. I think this can also be done for Mac users as well.

Unity 2.1

Install that to fix your problem windows users and possibly mac users
