Greetings everyone;
My radio internet was installed several days ago, and it works great! Among other things, I can now actually play Mars Explorer... With the ability to battle-test networking issues now within my grasp, I have determined to bullet proof Mars Explorer's multiplayer system once and, hopefully, for all. This release is focused on networking reliability, with a couple other features thrown in for good measure.
Please let me know how it works for you!
-Aubrey
P.S. Only a webplayer is available, as I don't intend to leave this in beta stage for more than a couple days. Once we have it working great, it will go final.
Update: I just uploaded a new version (refresh to access it) which resolves some issues with ramosphere and tank CG conflicts, and incorporates an incredible idea I received from MacDane this morning: Zorb balls...
Update 2: 1.9.76 is now final!
- Networking, internal game object references, tag logic, and vehicle orginization / instantiation code rewritten from the ground up. Should be vastly more reliable!
- Tag has been taken to the next level with RamoSpheres! (I think they were Kruncher's idea, but whoever's idea they were certainly deserves credit for them)
- Various GUI enhancements, including resizing several buttons for dashboard widget display size and reorganizing the buttons at the bottom of the server list screen
- "Exit Game" button is now visible only in native applicatios
- Server name shortened from 60 char max to 45
- Lasers now last for 10 seconds instead of five - much more fun at slowest server laser speeds
- Smart cam is now perfectly smooth - no more "jarring" while your vehicle sails over the top of a parabolic trajectory and the camera transitions from an up to a down lookahead mode
- Lasers pack a bit more punch
- Every laser you fire that hits a non-quarry when you aren't quarry decreases your score by one point. Take that, noobs!
- New server setting for tank tread grip. At low grip levels, the increasingly large torque produced by each tread assembly's motor as your speed decreases while climbing super steep hills will rotate the track and "ratchet" you off the hill
- Tank now has a simplified body to display at low rendering quality levels
- Instead of rewriting the (single player) tutorial map to work with all the new (multi player) networking code, I just removed it. It will probable make a comeback when I get an opportunity.
- Max 300 chars message length

Aubrey,
There is something up with it, as it refuses to load
Is this a link issue, or a game issue?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Sorry - I just finished uploading a new version that solves an issue with RamoSpheres messing up vehicle CGs when they are present while vehicles are instantiated.
Should be working now!
Edit: Really sorry, but it looks like my upload didn't resolve the issue - and now I am being called for dinner... I will release a fix - and then be on for a game or two - as soon as I can finish :)
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
no still won't upload to the game
edit it does now

It works now, Thank you

umm is the tank meant to spaz and fly around at high alts as that is what happened to me when i went to try out the tank
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Everything seems great so far! I can't wait for the app version. It will be interesting to see how low some people's scores will get. ;-)
P.S. Congratualtions on the radio internet. Does this mean we'll see you in games a lot more often?

re; tag, tagged, quarry change
I noticed instead of it saying Player is now the quarry
it says player tagged somebody
I also noticed where it should say player tagged somebody *in the old system*
it now says player got somebody
I'm sorry Aubrey, but I like the old system better, less confusing
plus, quarry is so much a part of the game, why change it?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Also
Air to Ground Lasers still do not register at all
Please fix this Aubrey
Edit;
And after a Fantastic Game with Aubrey and Picard
Air to Ground Lasers work :-)
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
I agree. To quote an old T.V. commercial, "Where's the Quarry!?!?". Wait, that wasn't right... oh well. Please bring the quarry back. We had a picture of the clubhouse and everything.

Great job Aubrey! Everything seems fine.

Hi all.
Although I have only begun testing this version, it seems most promising to me.
The RamoSpheres looks awesome and they seem to work like a charm.
- I tried adding a bot and was actually able to buzz it at high speed by low passing it as it tried to drive away from me. The poor thing never knew what hit it.
I also love the way the RamoSpheres look and use them to navigate in the air. This might sound odd to you, but just try to switch the RamoSpheres on and press 4 to switch view. You can now read your relative rotation by watching the grid rotate in your view whan you turn, loop or roll. If you see one of the poles tailing your buggy, you are either going up or you are on the fast train for a date with the Martian surface. :O)
But now I will go and see if someone shows up on the server.
Have fun.
- MacDane

I DIDN'T EVEN SEE IT?!?!?!
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Ok, so I tried it out for a brief period of time on the windows laptop. Currently, the highest rendering spped i can get is 12-14 FPS on fastest. Any solutions to that? The ramospheres look awesome. (Ramospheres, ACTIVATE!) Nice job! I hope to see you on Mars soon, Aubrey!
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
EDIT: After writing the text below, I went back and tried changing settings myself.
There seems to be an odd limiter on frame rate when not in full screen.
When not in full screen and settings at fastest, I couldn't pass 50fps no matter what.
I was hosting and playing alone, no bots, music off, lowest possible resolution (only one possible actually)
and even the window sized down to a fourth of my screen.
When I went to full screen, I suddenly hit 199fps and it stayed in the 180-199 area as long as I played in full screen. Also the fps were much higher even when playing at "Fantastic"
-------- End of edit--------
Hi Zoe,
Solutions have to match problems, so lets first find out what causes the mess.
You can put your computer through the tests at http://www.pcpitstop.com/
If you find nothing abnormal, try the game settings and see if that gives any info.
- First lets determine if the problem comes from the game itself, so try both hosting but also try joining games. Hosting should potentially give you lower frame rate as all the other players are connected through you.
- Then try to host a coded game in freestyle, so you are on your own. Try if the different settings change your frame rate. You may experience frame rate changing due to traffic on the game server, so check more than once.
- Experiment with bots, add all you can, wait and see if frame rate drops. If not, allow them to drive and shoot. Pump up the RamoSpheres and see if that does anything.
I hope this will help you get your frame rate up.
If not, I am sure Aubrey or some of our more nerdy players will gladly step up to the plate and help a damsel in distress. *Notch- Notch... Wink-wink... Wake up guys and help her out instead of just hiding under the couch*
See you soon
- Johnny

I'd try to help, however; I may be hiding under our couch soon as the storm going through the midwest is currently right on top of us.

Johnny;
Thanks for all your suggestions!
Note: Unity automatically caps "in page" webplayers at around 50 FPS (above which FPS inprovements are practacally imperceptible anyway) , so this is what you were experiencing.

Sadly, I can't connect to any servers on the web player version of 1.9.76, or 1.9.75... Also, on the web player, when ever I open a menu (such as connection settings, or game settings (game settings only effected when I am not server host)), the menu is blank, and I loose control over everything. When it is game settings, all I can control in the "exit server" button, which once I use, everything is back to normal (and I have to rejoin). I am sure it is a great version, but I am unable to comment on it it's self at the moment. As for game settings, that only happened on 1.9.75, I have no clue if it does in 1.9.76.
Edit: I tried to start my own server, and it crashed.
Edit Two: I tried death ray's trick, (open a window of mars explorer, if the server list does not load, open a new window, then close the other, done) and it is working fine, menus and all.

MacDane, i think part of the problem is all of the junk that my little sister has on her hard drive that she never bothered to clear out after she was done using it. However, thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to try the fullscreen method.
On another non-related note, Mars explorer, any version that can be played in the browser, refuses to load. I tried to play the raptor safari game made with Unity, and it said something about my need to disable Rosetta Emulation. Could this be affecting Mars's lack of loading? If any tech geek out there knows what's going on, info would be appreciated.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Most certainly!
Running your browser in Rosetta mode could easily bring Mars Explorer to a crawl or prevent it from loading entirely.
To fix this issue, find your browser application (most likely Safari, located in /Applications) in the Finder, click it once, and then press the "Command" and "I" keys on your keyboard.
In the "Info" dialog that will appear, uncheck "Open using Rosetta", restart your browser, and you should be good to go.
More details Here.

Update: I just uploaded a new version (refresh to access it) which
resolves some issues with ramosphere and tank CG conflicts, and
incorporates an incredible idea I received from MacDane this morning: Zorb balls...
To play inside a Zorb Ball; enable ramospheres on the server, and then type "/z" (for Do Zorb) into the mesaging console text field and press "Enter".

Aubrey, this is so fun playing in a zorb ball

thanks a bunch Aubrey for incorporating MacDanes idea

Ok, It is official, I love this version!!! I think it is a great idea to implement key commands into the text box!
The thing about this game, is that I think it can't get any better! And then it does!
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
While I do like these new features, I hope that in future versions we will be able to switch them off. also, still cant get the settings page for the server list/startup page.
PS: Love the new version, but look forward to a operational sea monster.

the zorb ball will not work it says
"zorb ball unavalible"
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
The reason it says that ryriser, is cause the server host didn't enable in.

All known bugs are now fixed (Especially several related to the new Zorb balls).
If no new ones are uncovered, this version will be going final tomorrow.

Wow another version so quickly. Aubrey is definately working hard.
U ROCK AUBREY!!!!!!!
Flying in Zorb radically changes flight pitch agility, more agility (smaller loops) right side up and less agility upside down (enormous loops) but allows several seconds of otherwise unhindered upside down flying under lava surface!
Please DON'T "fix"! WEEEEEEEEEE!
Pic 1 (below) is flying under lava surface upside down @ 133 MPH

Pic 2 (below) is flying out of lava upside down @ 128 MPH

I like how the RamoSphere field is actively moving instead of looking like a static cage.

Heh, we can now play Martian Basketball! Shrink the size of your zorb, hop in the mini-cano and then direct yourself to the best of your ability toward the volcano. *SWISH!*

Than you so much Aubrey. It's great to see that Mars Explorer is making so much progress so quickly. I am especially impressed with the Zorb balls. There are so many uses for them. As soon as they are debugged, they will be awsome!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you AUBREY!!!!!!!!!

*Runs up out of breath* I'...it..it's BAAACK! The disappearing menu, it has returned! RUNNN! I can't see any servers, when I click "show settings," the interface disappears as before.

DUUUCK!
Where?
- Are you playing in browser, dashboard, or native app? I just tried all three, and everything appears to be working.
- is the issue still occurring, or is it a one time thing?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
In Browser, using Safari - latest beta version, it only seems to happen on my Mac, not on my Windows machine. It could be the browser (On Windows I use Internet Explorer). This was happening in the previous version also. It is still happening, no servers can be seen, though occasionally one may be up. I believe this happened to others in the previous version also.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Same with me, except I use deathray's trick to get it working again, and I use an older version of safari.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
What's Deathray's trick? Was there a thread/post or something that I missed?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Deathray's trick was to open the game, then open it again in another window, then close the first window.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Does this keep the menu from disappearing when re-opening it again in the other window, or does it just "bring it back" again so I can click on it and then face-palm myself?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
As far as I know (I've never had to use his trick), all of the game should be working in the second window, however; this trick might just have been for when no games show up, I can't really remember. Hopefully, no face-palming will be required.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Aubrey,
It seems that anyone who joins a game after I do shows up as not responding on the Mac App. Their messages still show up in the Messaging Console though.
EDIT: Its working now though. I think it might have been because I didn't have "Force NAT" on.

It is a great version, and I absolutely love riding around in my zorb ball! THough, every time I try to get on the volcano, I simply end up orbiting around it LOL. Nothing to complain about... Except, a minor issue: Allot of players miss server insanity! Can we please have it back (perhaps as an option, the default of which being "off" (That way, when noobs start servers, they won't know how to get insane physics, and we can feel safe about it (but we, the non-noobs, (I should not say we, I am a noob my self lol) who can use it properly, will still have the option!))).
Run on sentence, run on! You almost have finished the race, sentence, run on.... YEAH! FIRST PLACE!

Hi Aubrey,
Please consider altering takeoff physics? I know you said driving physics aren't final.
All settings at default>drive>gain speed>deploy wings>press S key/down arrow>nose grind>flip> :(

» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Opening wings at all tends to cause such things... (on ground)
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Only with wing deploy blend off. I ask that having WDB off be default.
» Reply to CommentNot "only with blend off" no no no!
No, not "only with blend off" !! Besides, who cares?
YES! to making Stall Blend off as a default! I would also like to say that despite having asked Aubrey for so much and gotten even more than was asked for, I would really appreciate the return of some wall collision physics since it's frustrating touching a wall or landing and coming to a total halt from 200 MPH. Just some sense of momentum.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
Ok, I think you may be correct there about the WDB, but it never happens at speed with WDB off - for me, at least.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
In any case, it's frustrating, yes?
BTW, Wing Deploy Blend has been renamed Stall Blend
I agree with you Spiffy that I would prefer it be off as a default.
Speaking of wings, the old wingless flying buggy is back. lol Seen it many times lately.

*Face-Palm* Everyone knew what I was talking about, eh? Stall Blending...right you are, krunch! Yes, I agree, it is annoying.

well no one else seemed to notice this, and me and dude just did, the skid marks from 1.9.7 and 1.9.6 are gone!!! i like them and would like to see them back in the game aubrey. if you can, please implement them again!

Another idea I asked for a long time ago - instead of only being able to use presets, could we have the option to use a settings system similar to 1.7 - the ability to individually turn things on and off, allowing us our favorite settings, without getting lagged.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 1.9.76 Released!
I agree. I've really missed being able to have trails on my slower computers.
