Networking Renovations

Greetings everyone!
I have been toiling over extensive renovations in Mars Explorer's networking system, background information on which can be found @ this thread on the Unity developer forums.
2.11 represents the beginning of these renovations, and a tremendous milestone in Mars Explorer's development: the rise of the dedicated server. Don't let the .01 version jump lull you into complacency - this is just a continuation of the epic 2.1 beta series, with a slight version bump because it's networking is significantly rewritten and is not backwards compatible with the rest of the 2.1 players.
Previously, every game you joined in Mars Explorer was "hosted" by the player who started it. This meant that every piece of information (vehicle positions, rotations, & velocities, laser fires, laser hits, color changes, etc etc) was sent from your computer to the host's computer, and then from the host's computer to the computers of other players connected to the server. In essence; unless the host had a first rate internet connection, gameplay was terrible.
With 2.11, this all changes. There is now a fleet of "dedicated" servers ready to host your games for you, relaying network packets far more rapidly and reliably than your home computer ever could. Best of all, the "client" version of Mars Explorer retains all it's logic to act as a host when necessary - allowing you to host offline LAN games just as easily as ever!
Connection to a dedicated server when starting a game will soon be completely automated and transparent to the end user - but for this first release, just join an empty "Dedic8d" server to get started. Mars Explorer will detect when you are the first one to join a dedicated server, and will enter a special mode that allows you to exercise full control of your game just as if you were "hosting it" in a previous version.
This is just a first release, and there are still many things to be done!
Player banning, eviction, and password protected games aren't quite working yet with the dedicated servers - and there are probably other bugs as well.
Once I get the networking perfected a bit more, I will be back to work on the standard enhancements (such as cameras) :)
Enjoy!
-Aubrey
Other stuff in this release:
- Awesome new loading graphics and webplayer installation splashscreen
- Autofocus webplayer for more intuitive name entry when playing for first time
- Faster webplayer loading
- Incredibly polished starfield :)
- Smoother borders on the "black cloud" floating behind the list server
- Server list should now load instantly
- No more lockups or glitches when canceling loading a world
- Now automatically finds open ports to make starting a server a cinch
- Name entry page now looks perfect @ any viewport resolution
- More personable connection failed message
- Connection retry system now works with direct connections as well
- Fixed "news ticker buttons" flickering with strange messages while reentering lobby after exiting a game
- Network Interpolation now correctly defaults to 300 ms instead of 200 ms
- Enhanced Server Settings networking interface
- Whirld library can now read .obj files without them needing to be gzipped. That's right - you can now design a world in Blender, and play it just about instantly in Mars Explorer!

Aubrey,
I can not load any of the worlds past the point where it's loading terrain without my browser crashing, which did not happen in 2.1 period.
I can not start my own server, or join anybody elses game because of this issue.
I am using Opera Web Browser, and I am on a 2008 Hp Desktop Computer with Windows Vista. I have over 80% of my hard drive free.
Please let me know what could be causing this problem.

Thanks for reporting!
I will be offline for the rest of the day, but will look into this at my next available opportunity.
To aid in debugging, can you load block worlds like Fort Boxy?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
I can load worlds like Fort Boxy Aubrey,
and surprisingly can now load all the other worlds.
But when I first reported this to you,
The entire loading process would halt at "Initializing Terrain",
Then my browser would crash.
Edit:
World Loading is sketchy for me, sometimes it will load, and sometimes it won't.
Another Bug Found:
Once I finally loaded a world, and had a fairly stable game, I decided to try the tank to explore the sea floor for a bit. Upon entering the tank, I found it to be very spazzy and out of control.
I am not sure if this is default setting or not, I'll get back to you on that Aubrey.

It's either Vista (I am so sorry, but it actually is probably the case) or Opera. Firefox, Safari, even Internet Explorer 6 works fine with Mars Explorer, on a Mac OSX 10+ or Windows XP. I have no clue about Windows 7, though, so if you're desperate for a change, and since you have 80+% of your hard drive, just install Mac. You can have up to 3 different operating systems, and still have a fast computer, and do you really need 4 anyway?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
I played it. Only thing is that you start off with green cause you are the quarry. Can you fix that please?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
Yes - I will be working on all the things like this.
Big picture; the networking should be vastly more reliable and player movement far smoother then ever before. Thats the real focus of this release :)

Is there anything new that you have been using in Mars Explorer's creation?
It turns out that 2.1 AND the 2.11 Beta do not work on my computer, but everything else DOES.
This is getting EXTREMELY frustrating, and what makes it weirder is that on ANOTHER profile on the same computer, 2.1 and 2.11 work just fine.
The other profile is Password Protected by my brother (Morb) and he isn't always around to let me on...
The LOADING for Mars Explorer will come up, load and stop at this screen:

PLEASE help Aubrey.
P.S. I don't want any help from anyone else. I have tried everything except uninstalling Unity and reinstalling it, which Morb doesn't want me to do.

Riku;
If you could attempt to play with a different browser, that would isolate quite a few possible errors.
Absent of that, please clear your browser's cache. Perhaps there is a corrupted version of the game's data file stuck on your computer...

I have something you could use in your new version, It is the speeder. I have it in a post and it has gotten good responses from the commentors. Please take a look at this if you get the time. Thanks ~Jetster ^_^
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
Aubrey, the games take an unbelievable amount of time to load. When I was entering a game that used the lava racer (huge), it would only go up by loading the terrain by less than .00 percent every second.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
Hey Aubrey, for the future, will you be able to load pre made worlds from unity, EASILY, without the need of a server?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
Do you mean like just to test the worlds out, or to let people play them in the dedicated servers?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
Awesome! but, hey, how do you convert the shetchup into blender and use it in mars explorer? and does it take any programming?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
I have found a way to get Sketchup to Blender, but if you're wanting to put things in Mars Explorer it would be faster to go straight to Unity3d from Sketchup. For info on Sketchup to Unity3d, click here.

YEA 2.1!!! Wow Mars has been upgraded so rapidly lately... But keep doind this. I was looking at the Unity thing stuff and I agree with whoever posted this that you have the ability to download all of the curent well known worlds and you run it off your computer to do most of the loading for loading worlds. I also move to do something. I move that Flyclub who has given so much to the comunity giveAurbey the code for his creator so Aurbey could in his extra extra spare time modify it to be much better and make an official guide. I also move to update the website to recognize GTR in the tributes page that he designed the Jet!!! Must now play 2.11!!!!!!!!!!!!

The dedicated servers are great, please keep them Aubrey.
Glitches: The only glitch I found was that when you try to edit server settings, the box collapses at random times and I have to keep reopening it.

Aubrey, could you add in a feature later on to alert hosts of password protected servers that someone is trying to join?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
There already is one. At least, there was in 2.1. Not sure if it's still in 2.11. A number pops up next to the "Players" box when someone tries to join.

*** Huge Update In Progress ***
Sorry for the dearth of messages for the past several days. I recently uploaded a huge update to 2.11, which brings the dedicated server implementation near to perfection. Password protected servers, inviting players, evicting players, and banning players should now all be functional when your game is utilizing a dedicated server. I also build a new system that makes starting your game on a dedicated server completely transparent: Click "Host Game", and Mars Explorer will take care of the rest. (There are no more "Dedic8ed" servers cluttering up the lobby list.) And for an ultimate bonus, games can now last forever! Whenever a game's host leaves, the dedicated server selects a new player to be host, does a bunch of tricky stuff behind the scenes, and the game goes on. Dedicated servers will only shutdown after the last connected player has left. This should take games to a new level of involvement! (I will eventually add a system to let hosts choose their successors, or possibly even have players vote for a host.)
2.11 gameplay has most likely been pretty spotty for the last day or two as I have been testing and updating many different versions of dedicated servers - and since the latest update included some extensive changes to the client side codebase, there are probably quite a few new bugs to eliminate.
My currently envisioned roadmap involves finalizing everything as rapidly as possible, and officially releasing the 2.1 series as soon as it is stable, essentially bug free, and contains a couple more refinements such as a perfected camera system. For 2.2, I am very excited to continue fine tuning the Whirld library. Cacheable, rapidly loading worlds and powerful tools to turn any kind of map into a Mars Explorer scene in one step are both high on my to-do list.

ok, im havingan issue. I can't seem to be able to connect to any other servers that include the non-block worlds. Why is that?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
no you are joining the games, but then you leave pretty much right after you join.
Aubrey the game is also booting out people at it's own free will, by saying they were inactive for 5 min even if they were chasing the quarry, and not sitting still, it rages from about 15 seconds, to more then 30 min but anything over 5 minutes it still says 5 minutes, can you please fix this as it is annoying, as you keep having to rejoining the game, no matter what you were doing at the time when it booted you by it's self

you should make it so you can use google sketch up because it is much easier to create.

you can if you use unity to create whirlds, but you have to ask to have them put into the game.

Several bugfix versions have been released since the last update, each refining the networking implementation. Although not perfect, it is getting really good!
Aside from the occasional master server crash (which should soon be resolved) and "no connection" players (which Unity is working on, but may take a while to actually be fixed), there are now no known networking nuances.
With the new dedicated servers, gameplay is far smoother than ever before! Players glide across your screen instead of jittering all over the place, and servers can last indefinitely instead terminating without warning when the host decides to leave.
A couple days ago I participated in an unofficial stress test - and during the course of several hours, racked up a score of 215 while having a blast engaging in action packed dogfights. I didn't experience a single glitch.
The next release should include a new world loading system that is FAR faster for large, detailed worlds - and with it, several awesome new maps that players like Seb and Eric have been creating. Once the new world system is perfected, 2.1x will go live - and we can all live happily ever after*.
*Till I get around to adding teams, races, CTF, and other exciting ideas :)
All the best,
-Aubrey

Regarding your Recent Overhaul of the dedicated servers,
Something is very wrong with them,
Yes, they make the game much more smoother.
In fact they're great! Except for one little flaw...
Not-connected/Not-responding players are worse than ever Aubrey.
You can not leave a server up for 10 minutes without having every new player join
and not be not-connected, even for the host, which has never happened before.
Also, player data simply gets stuck into a game,
I've seen upwards of 40 or so not-connected buggies lying around of players that aren't even there anymore.
Aubrey, that is a major problem, please look into what is causing it and please fix.
Sincerely ~ The Dude
Edit:
Screen shots from a server not more than 10 minutes old.
(Will Insert once site is right again)
I will also take the time to reiterate that Google Chrome is coming to Mac,
and that it still is not compatible with Marsxplr.com, or any plexpedia website.
It constantly asks you to log in, and will not allow you to send pms, post threads, or comment on threads.
Aubrey, I honestly think the two bugs above should be your top priority instead of fancy new toys for us to play with. No offense to you, but toys are no fun unless they work properly.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
The chrome thing is a google problem, not a Mars problem.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
Yeah we really should have an option again instead of being forced to use dedicated servers.... Plus it's not fair to boot someone out just because they're brbing for 5 minutes! The host of the game should choose to boot not the machine! How does it know that person is going to get a sandwich with fries n' gravy for five minutes?
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
You're not "forced" to use the dedicated servers. If you go under "Show Settings" in the server list, there is a choice to either use dedicated servers, or host them yourself.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
We should keep the dedicated servers (anyone can join or host them), but the non responding glitch should be fixed instead of doing away with them.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta

That's a rather impatient server disconnect, lol!

Aubrey,
The Dedicated servers are now officially a joke to me.
They're just plain terrible and unrealiable now.
Servers are no good past 5 minutes. period.
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
Hey, I've told you before, he's on the problem.
The servers forget special networking ids, and likewise, do not know what objects to remove.
Likewise, the system doesn't know how to delete the player objects.
He's making a new release soon, and has heard you the last times.

The game is occasionally not registering hits that are confirmed by a visual laser splash on and/or a change in trajectory of said hit buggy body. (Mine and/or theirs) I am also occasionally seeing lasers travel directly through other's vehicles without any game response whatever.
This is rare and I'm aware that networking is being worked on. Thanks.

I also found a bug. When i was on this windows computer at school on Tuesday, i had a framerate of 30 and i was on the lowest quality setting possible. I switched to a tank. I was in the foxholes world. Wen I fell off the mountain area, i would pass through the lava floor before appearing at 1000 alt. I would then keep flying up until about 9500 alt. I would then fall and pass through the ground beneath the lava again, and the process would repeat until I reset. Another glitch that made the first one very easy was when I was a tank and flipped over and accelerated, i would jump to a speed of 150 and accelerate quickly. This was not necessary to cause the first glitch.

This Server has no host. Kirby left his server at the same time I joined, and left no one with a host. Kirby then rejoined and there was still no host.

» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
Here's another pic and a summary of what happened Aubrey. I made a dedicated server, but I left it. At that moment, App of the Sky joined. I saw that he had, so I rejoined. When I did, neither of was host, and my "zombie buggy" was quarry and host. But when I went to obtain quarry from it, I found it was floating under the world. Naturally, I shot it. When I did, it kept quarry, and it blasted downwards... PAST the boundary that respawns you. I tried to follow it, but it respawned me. Yeah, so, I think that there's a few problems here. Keep up the good job!

» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
I've found a bug - the cause of all the NR clones? - that happens whenever I host a server. Every time that a player switches vehicles they leave behind a clone of their previous vehicle. When I try to stop this by turning off every vehicle except buggys, the jet doesn't turn off. That's pretty annoying on it's own. It is impossible to turn off jets.

Aubrey, all the dedicated servers in 2.11 last night were all players no connection as VIEWED by all players, no exceptions. They were better before so maybe this means that larus chap from Unity is working on it? I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Regretfully, larus does not strike me as very motivated though, based on his replies to your plight in the Unity forum. I also noticed some members of the forum would rather talk down than help. Sorry for your frustration there. Maybe, just maybe, SOME DAY........
Unchecking dedicated server in game list settings allowed me to host an all players connected game which was sweet!
» Reply to CommentRe: Mars Explorer 2.11 Beta
The dedicated servers were great at first because they did not have the "blocked by firewall when you have no firewall" bug, so anyone could join them. I think they should be kept, and the bug should be fixed.
